Adam Whittle

Musical Director/Musician/Tutor

Adam Whittle

Adams musical career began at the tender age of 6 with school lessons in his Derbyshire home town of Shirland. As a young trumpet player, Adam enjoyed his first ensemble experience in his school years, playing with the school's wind and jazz bands.

At the age of 11, Adam joined the Shirland Welfare Training band and left his trumpet behind for a cornet. Hard work and commitment saw progression through the ranks to principal cornet of the Training band and a position within the elite main band by the age of 12.

Soon realising that improvement had ceased on the cornet, Adam moved to the Trombone section within, what was then, a strong first section band. He began trombone lessons at the age of 14 and sat 2nd trombone at Shirland Welfare and at 15, took the principal trombone position. From this point on, Adam's musical career within the banding movement grew from strength to strength as He enjoyed many successes with the Shirland Welfare band including contest wins and appearances at the national finals in Harrogate and Cheltenham.

In 2011, Adam stepped into a new realm of the banding world and became the administrator for the North East Midlands Brass Band Association. Adam spent a year in this position and due to unforeseen circumstances moved on in 2012, but He remains closely involved with many contest organisations across the Country. Adam is currently proud to be the Trophy Officer for Leicester Brass Band Association and the Contest Controller for the first section of the Butlins Mine-workers Championships in Skegness.

Mid 2011 saw the end to a long relationship with the Shirland Welfare Band. Adam joined Chapeltown Silver Prize Band in High Green, Sheffield and again changed his instrument. This time as a member of the Euphonium section, He enjoyed 2 years as both Principal and 2nd Euphonium.

In 2013, the trombone section called to Him once more after the loss of their much loved solo trombone player and friend, David Smith. He remained in this position for a further 2 years. Adam has performed and enjoyed with many bands across the Midlands and Yorkshire and has competed at all levels including the Championship section.

Playing was not the only thing Adam had in mind for his future. Adam had a desire to take on his own band and a position as Musical Director for many years and in 2014 - 15 Adam built his own band from scratch and conducted them in a joint directorship. Cross County Brass, as it is now known, is a solely charitable band and donates all monies tohelp for heroes as an official band for this charity.

In October 2015, Adam took to the helm at Rockingham band. After a hard going period and with only 8 players left, the band began to rebuild under their new musical director.Adam came to the band with a firm and hopeful plan and led the band to a strong 2nd place at the Yorkshire Regional Championships on the 5th March 2016. The band also claimed the best percussion and youngest player award in their section and qualified for the National Finals of Great Britain in September 2016. The band where promoted to the third section for 2017 and continue to improve and progress.

Adam also provides private brass tuition to both beginners and advanced players. He will teach basics from scratch or advanced technique, so if you fancy a go please get in touch on our contact page!

"I come to Rockingham with a strong banding history and a constant drive to improve. The band is in a strong position in the contest rankings, so from here, I intend to rebuild the band to its former glory and build upon their past success. This band will not disappear! It's a long road ahead but I see big things for Rockingham band and have confidence that we can achieve them together!"Adam Whittle - Musical Director
