A huge Rockingham Welcome...

January 10, 2019

The band are once again proud and excited to welcome a new member to the ever improving team. Stuart Neeve joins the front cornet bench as Assistant Principal Cornet, joining a well balanced team ahead of the Yorkshire Regional Championships. Stuart joins us after a short break from banding having played at Strata Brass for many years previously. This may be a new signing for the current band, but Stuart is no stranger to Rockingham colors.  Having played for the band many years ago as a very young man (pictured left - right of conductor, front row) Stuart has seen success here before. We hope that we can capture some of that past success as we look forward to the 2019 Regionals and many more to come.

Team Holling returns!

December 01, 2018

The band are excited to announce that Mr and Mrs Holling, as very acomplished and able players,  have taken the decision to join and rejoin the band. Mrs Holling (Sophie) played solo horn for the band two years ago, sadly leaving us following our National Finals appearance in 2016. Since leaving the band, Sophie married her long term partner Andrew Holling. Andrew and Sophie as a 'not so newly' married couple have taken a short break from banding in recent months but have finally decided to become members of the Rockingham band on the Horn and Trombone sections respectively. The band would like to officially welcome Sophie back to the band and Andrew for the first (Official) time. We look forward to many happy and successful years to come.

Return to the podium!!

September 30, 2018

The 2018 Bolsover Festival of Brass saw Rockingham return to the podium positions once more! From 3rd place draw, the band commanded the stage with a performance of character and professionalism that found great favour with adjudicator Anne Crookston.

The band opened with a big hitting swing number 'Sing, Sing, Sing!' featuring kit percussionist Steve Riley. Followed by the outstanding virtuosity of our very own 'Harmonious Blacksmith' Kieth Taylor (principal euphonium). A special dedication to the fallen was paid to soldiers related to the current band with the beautiful 'In Flanders Fields' which was all topped off by 2018 Brass Fest composition, 'Into the Future'.

Anne said that the band showed character throughout and praised several members of the band for their work.

This contest marks the beginning of a 3 tier contest plan for 2018/19 and we hope to see further success as we complete our hat-trick attempt.

Childrens Hospital cash booster!

July 31, 2018

Following a fantastic concert in the Milton Hall, Rockingham band are proud to announce their cash boost total of £850.00!! The total amount was presented to the children's hospital charity by Adam Whittle (MD), Jacky Wadsworth (General Secretary), Alan Braithwaite (Equipment Officer) and Laura Young (Social Secretary) alongside our star guest and inspiration for the event, Harrison Young.

The event was the brain child of Laura who has made many visits to the Children's hospital for care of young Harrison. The concert décor, organisation and preparation where largely down to her and her family. For this, we say a huge thank you and congratulations on such a fantastic final figure!

The cornet legend that is Roger Webster will join forces with Rockingham and later this year for a fabulous evening of music and solo features. New cornet expertese...

April 07, 2018

We are once again proud to announce the arrival of a new member to the band. Laura Charlson joins the band having recently moved into the local area of Wombwell. Laura has been a teacher for the past 15 years and specializes in English for 14-19 year old students with behavioral problems. Playing cornet from the age of 8 to 16 with Trinity Girls and Pemberton junior bands, Laura gave music a break for some years until returning to it in her twenties. Now, after relocating, she has taken up the cornet again on our back row. We welcome Laura to the fold and look forward to working with her for many years to come.

Regional Success!!

March 20, 2018

The Yorkshire Regional Championships saw Rockingham take their place in the top 4 in section 3 on the 5th March 2018. Playing 'Napoleon on the Alps', M.D Adam Whittle was so impressed with the performance given by the band that he left the stage in tears! He said ' this is by far the bands best performance under my baton to date. They did as I asked and the soloists shone above the overall performance. It wasn't a win at the contest, but it's a win for me and the band'. Rockingham wish to congratulate Barnsley Brass, Dronfield and Emley on their top 3 finishes as well deserving winners.

Rockingham now sit level at the top of the 3rd section which puts them in a strong position for promotion in 2019.

Hollywood Hills and Big Band Thrills!

March 20, 2018

We are proud to announce our charity concert on Saturday 23rd June 2018 in aid of the Sheffield Children's Hospital. This initiative was born In 2017 when the band announced the welcome return of cornet player Laura Young. Laura and her boy Harrison have visited this fantastic facility on many occasions and have received a standard of care which has exceeded expectation and inspired a need to raise much needed funds in return.

Rockingham have taken this cause to their heart too and will present  their film and big band concert in the Milton Hall at Elsecar with all proceeds going to the Sheffield Children's Hospital.

Tickets are now on sale for £7.00 or £5.00 concessions. This gets you a fun packed evening of music including bar and refreshments.  Doors open at 18:30 and we 'strike up the band' at 19:00.

We hope to see you there to support a fantastic charity! #TeamTheo

'Banging' new support gained...

January 30, 2018

Once again the band welcome further new and returning talent to the band, this time on the percussion section. Steve Rilley, an accomplished drummer and percussionist, joins the ranks as a different musical outlet from his usual 'Bootleggers' group. Steve returns to the brass banding world having taken 26 years off after leaving Stamford Brass under the baton of fellow percussionists Father, Mr D Prew. Steve brings a wealth of experience to the section ahead of the regional contest but will also remain a regular member of the band.

Sophie Hare also takes up the sticks having never played regularly with a band before. Sophie comes from a well supported banding background with her Father playing Eb bass for the band and her Mother playing Solo Horn at Chapeltown Silver. Although she has not played with a band regularly, Sophie did make her debut with Cross County Brass some years previous again on the percussion section.

'We welcome both Steve and Sophie to Rockingham with open arms. Both have attended a rehearsal or two and fit well alongside Chris and Jatinder to make for a very promising percussion section. I look forward to working further with them both in the run up to the regionals and on our summer programme, perhaps featuring a little of the 'Bootleg' spirit in the section. Exciting times ahead I feel!' (Adam Whittle - M.D)

Welcome to the fold!

Ingamells takes lead...

January 19, 2018

Luke Ingamells, the bands former 2nd man, has taken on the key role of Principal Cornet to lead the band to the 2018 regionals and beyond. Coming from a banding family background, Luke is a true bndsmen in every sense of the word.  Luke came to the band on the front row in early 2017 and has shown true dedication and commitment to the organisation ever since. His playing and attitude has impressed M.D Adam Whittle throughout the past 12 months leaving a very easy decision on who should take the key chair.

Luke's partner Jen has also given her time to the band to fill positions as a deputy player and is a very competent Baritone member of the Hatfield banding family.

'Luke is a true asset to the Rockingham band. He has shown true dedication to the band throughout 2017, especially at Christmas time. His ability to play and his attitude towards banding is something I truly respect and admire. He will have no trouble in filling the role of principal and I look forward to working with him in 2018 and beyond'

Musical Director - Adam Whittle

Congratulations Luke!

For the greater good...

January 19, 2018

Sometimes in the current banding world it is necessary for players to demonstrate a level of flexibility within the band to accommodate others and/or fill gaps. We are lucky at Rockingham to have two very flexible individuals who have moved within the band to do exactly that.

Jonothan Braithwaite came to band to play alongside his Father, Alan, shortly after the appointment of Mr Adam Whittle as M.D. He joined the band on repiano cornet but soon after moved to the front row. Jonothan then moved to the trombone section to fill a vacant seat but found his way back to the cornet section by early 2017. In December, Jonathan again moved back to the trombone which, having moved several times for the good of the band, should have been his final endeavor. Not likely! Jonothan is now back on the cornet line playing 2nd Cornet for the rgionals 2018!

Luke Robins also joined the band after Adams arrival and progressed, on merit, from the back row to 2nd man. However, due to a vacant seat, he has now agreed to play 3rd cornet for the regionals 2018.

The band would like to thank both members for their outstanding flexibility and willingness to help fill positions. It is bandsmen such as these that sustain the future of bands across the globe.

Thank you Gentlemen!

Welcome Home...

January 19, 2018

The band are pleased to announce the return of yet another past player. Mr Mick Sidebottom has taken the decision to register for the band ahead of the 2018 Yorkshire Regional Championships to once again do battle under the Rockingham banner.

Mick joins us on Solo Trombone, a position in which Mick is most comfortable and has excelled in for many year. Having played at Cornerstone band, as he will continue to do, Mick will once again compete for the silver ware among friends new and old. He brings strength and knowledge to the band and we look forward to working with him now and in the future.

Welcome back Mick!

76 Trombones becomes 77...

December 19, 2017

The band are pleased to welcome a new member to their trombone section this December in preparation for 2018. Mr John Speight joins the band having enjoyed many years of banding in the local area. John also plays for a Barnsley based concert band where he plays Euphonium. This is all packed between his busy professional life as an engineer!

It is a pleasure to welcome you on board John and we look forward to many successful, happy years to come.

Full 'Steam' Ahead...

December 19, 2017

The band are very pleased to announce that the Cromford Steam Rally Society Ltd. based in Cromford, Derbyshire have given their support to our new training band venture. The society has very kindly donated £500.00 to our fund to help add a successful junior section to our thriving organisation.

We would like to say a huge thank you to the Cromford Steam Rally Society for their generosity.

Another Whittle takes the helm...

September 19, 2017

Our new Patronage Scheme has been set up and run to date by our Musical Director, Adam Whittle in the late months of 2016.

The Patronage Scheme now has 22 members and is going from strength to strength as 2017 passes us by. However, with his commitments to the musical aspect of the band, Adam has decided that the patrons would be in better hands with his Father, Richard Whittle.

Richard comes to the band with a wealth of band organizing experience. He held the position of Treasurer and General Secretary for the Shirland Band for several years, even filling both roles at once for some of that period. Richard then followed Adam to Chapeltown where he once again became the bands General Secretary.

Richard will be a greatr asset to the background team of the band and we know that our patrons will be in good hands. Richard also makes the pork pies for Todwick... well worth a try!!

Welcome to the fold Richard.

Educational Expertese join the ranks...

September 19, 2017

The Rockingham band are proud to announce the arrival of two new members of our happy, successful band.

Laura Young has come back home to the cornet section after a few years playing for the Cornerstone Band. Laura takes the Repiano cornet chair and is a great asset to the band and its future. Laura brings a wealth of musical talent to the band from her professional life as a Music Graduate and teacher in the local area.

Ian McKay also joins the band as our new first horn player. Ian is a fabulous player and musician who is also a teacher in his professional life in the Doncaster area. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the band from several years of playing with bands such as Stannington and Deepcar.

The band are looking forward to many sucessful years working with both of our new friends.

Welcome to the fold.

Goodbye for now...

September 19, 2017

The Rockingham band said farewell this week to our first horn player, Hannah Baird, as she heads off to study at University. Hannah has been with Rockingham band for several years and has been a part of the band success over the past 2 years.

The band is sad to see Hannah leave after so many years playing tenor horn, but we would all like to wish Hannah a happy and successful time studying and will look forward to seeing her during the Christmas break.

Good luck Hannah and Goodbye for now.

Training Band takes steps towards sucess...

September 19, 2017

Our fantastic secretary, Jacky Wadsworth, has been working extremely hard over the last 6 months to secure financial support for our new training band venture.

The idea comes from our Musical Director, Adam Whittle, based on a wealth of experience with junior ensembles. The grants that Mrs Wadsworth has applied for have been successful in securing much needed funds to enable the band to open its doors to Junior and training members in the early months of 2018. The Ward Alliance has been instrumental and we would like to thank them sincerely for their generous support.

Many people who attended remarked that this was ' one of the best workshops they had ever been to'

Regional Success!

March 05, 2017

In 2016, Rockingham band took promotion to the 3rd section of the Yorkshire Regional Championships. Taking on a new section brought new challenges to the band but they met it head on! Playing the modern set work 'Darkwood' by Dan Price, Rockingham finished in 6th place! (above half way) This not only placed Rockingham above other established bands in this section, it also put the band in 3rd place in the National Gradings for 2017/18.

Another remarkable result for the band on their way to the top!!

Roy Gilespie and David Wallis are both long standing friends of the Rockingham band and have re-joined the band once more to do battle for the silverware in March. Roy joins our Trombone section with force and Dave joins our Bass line with 'Darkwood' to contend with.

Both members are a true asset to the band and we look forward to taking on the 3rd section with them beside us.

Mrs Peggy Tomlinson recently attended the bands Christmas concert in Todwick to make three very special surprise awards.

Raymond Layte (Principal Bass), Jacky Wadsworth (Second Horn) and Dave Wadsworth (Bass Trom) all received awards for their many years of service to the banding movement. All of these recipients are key members of the Rockingham band and have been for many years.

The band is lucky to have such dedicated and experienced bandsmen and women within the organisation.

Congratulations!!

The Phoenix!

January 22, 2017

Like the Phoenix from the ashes, the Rockingham band has recovered from a lonely 8 players in 2015 to a full compliment and promotion to the third section! The band appointed their new MD, Adam Whittle, in October 2015 and over the course of the past year, they have gone from strength to strength.

A combination of hard work, sweat and indeed tears from the core members of the band has driven the name of Rockingham back into success. A new secretary was also appointed in 2016. Jacky Wadsworth alongside her husband, Dave have been key to the success achieved in the last year.  The band also note the contribution of the newly formed committee and of course all members of the band. Most notably Mr Raymond Layte and Mr Kieth Taylor. 2017 sees the Rockingham band take on the third section for the first time in many years but MD Adam Whittle is confident that this is a challenge that the band can meet and exceed.

Upon Adam's appointment, he said 'I would like to see the Rockingham band back where it belongs' and this is just the beginning!
